ASEAN-Japan Business Week – toward Innovative and Sustainable Growth – to be held

May 6, 2021

METI will hold the “ASEAN-Japan Business Week – toward Innovative and Sustainable Growth -” from May 24 to 28 in collaboration with relevant organizations of ASEAN and Japan. During the event, a series of webinars will be held under the themes of “Innovation” and “Sustainability,” featuring speakers from ASEAN and Japan business and academia.

Background

  • The Southeast Asia region has always been at the heart of international business for Japanese companies. However, this business environment has undergone significant changes in recent years. The diversification of needs and the intensification of competition associated with rapid economic growth in Southeast Asia have not ceased even under the COVID-19 pandemic, and in particular, digitalization has accelerated further. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in many aspects of our lives as we become more affluent and more concerned about social issues. And with that situation, as exemplified by the “green growth” debate, there are a lot of new business opportunities expected.
  • Therefore, it becomes even more important for Japanese businesses in the ASEAN region to increase the market value of their businesses in responding flexibly and rapidly to the massive transformation in the region.

Outline of the event

  • METI and ASEAN-Japan relevant organizations therefore decided to organize the “ASEAN-Japan Business Week – toward Innovative and Sustainable Growth -”, online seminar series as an opportunity to examine the current situation and potential of Southeast Asia business from the perspective of Japanese companies, with the keywords of “innovation” and “sustainability”.
  • During the seminar, leading companies will introduce specific examples of their initiatives, and a wide range of experts from various fields will discuss the challenges and measures to accelerate and expand these initiatives.

At the ASEAN Economic Minister (AEM) – METI consultation in 2020 August, in light of the fact that economic and industrial cooperation with ASEAN is at a major turning point, the ministers welcomed the launch of the “Dialogue for Innovative and Sustainable Growth (DISG)”, a new Public-Private Dialogue, in order to simultaneously achieve the strengthening of growth potential through “innovation” and “sustainable” economic growth.

Since the launch of the “Dialogue for Innovative and Sustainable Growth (DISG)”, a series of webinars have been held with the participation of a wide range of stakeholders from industry and academia in ASEAN-Japan. A total of 5 webinars have been held on a wide range of topics, including energy and trade facilitation, to discuss new industrial cooperation with ASEAN.
