On March 23, 2021, Mr. Kajiyama Hiroshi, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, held a web-meeting with Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Minister Kajiyama held a web-meeting with IAEA Director General Grossi.
Minister Kajiyama expressed his gratitude for the IAEA’s support over the years so far, in light of the tenth year since the accident at the TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) on March 11. He also requested Director General Grossi to continue cooperation from the IAEA, to enhance the confidence and transparency of the decommissioning work of FDNPS, both domestically and internationally.
Furthermore, regarding ALPS treated water as an urgent issue for Japan, he requested the IAEA to disseminate information on its current status and safety with the international community on the basis of scientific knowledge. Also, he asked cooperation after a decision on the basic policy on handling of the ALPS treated water, in the following areas: i) dispatch of review missions; ii) support to environmental monitoring; and iii) ensuring transparency towards the international community.
Director General Grossi acknowledged the efforts of the decommissioning work of FDNPS by the Government of Japan, and mentioned that the IAEA will cooperate, and is ready to assist in three areas that Minister Kajiyama suggested.
The both sides reaffirmed the utmost importance to ensure transparency to build confidence on this issue and agreed to continue to cooperate in this regard.
