The First Asia CCUS Network Forum to be Held

June 4, 2021

The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will hold the First Asia CCUS Network Forum on June 22 and 23, 2021. The event will be conducted online. The forum will include a launch ceremony for the Asia CCUS Network, information on joint research and studies, and discussions on how to stimulate investment and financing for CCUS.

Outline of the forum

METI is moving forward with the Asia Energy Transition Initiative (AETI) (related material 1) as a concrete support measure by Japan toward simultaneously achieving sustainable economic growth and carbon neutrality in Asia.

As part of this initiative, the Asia CCUS Network was proposed by Japan at the 14th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers’ Meeting (EAS-EMM) held in November 2020. The stated aim of the network was to share insights and develop the environment for using CCUS throughout Asia. The proposal was welcomed by all member countries. (Related material 2.)

The Asia CCUS Network will conduct activities to promote the use of CCUS throughout Asia. These will include capacity building and workshops for sharing knowledge and experience regarding CCUS, and surveys for improving the business environment. The network will be launched at the first Asia CCUS Network Forum, which will be held on June 22nd and 23rd, 2021.

The forum will include a launch ceremony with participants including EAS-EMM related countries, international organizations and private companies. It will also present information on joint research and studies, and hold discussions on how to stimulate investment and financing for CCUS.
