Results of the 63rd Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

The 63rd Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) started on July 14 in Geneva, Switzerland. As representatives of the Japan Patent Office (JPO), Mr. Hamano Koichi, Commissioner, and Mr. Katsura Masanori, Deputy Commissioner, attended the meeting, with Commissioner Hamano delivering a general statement at the opening session. Taking this opportunity, the JPO held meetings with the patent offices and other relevant organizations from over 20 countries and regions,* and at each meeting, the two sides advanced inter-governmental cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP).
1. Delivering a general statement at the meeting
At the opening session, Commissioner Hamano delivered a general statement as a representative of Japan. He expressed expectations for WIPO’s contribution to the international community with respect to the further development of the IP ecosystem and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also explained Japan’s global efforts in the field of IP.
2. Bilateral and multilateral meetings with other participating patent offices
Taking the opportunity of the meeting, the JPO held bilateral and multilateral meetings with officials of IP offices and other organizations from over 20 countries and regions. At each meeting, the JPO confirmed that cooperation will continue, and concluded new agreements on cooperation in the field of IP with the following countries and regions in particular.
(1) Brazil
The JPO and the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property confirmed the existing cooperation ties between them and signed a renewal of the memorandum of cooperation (MOC) in the field of IP.
(2) European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO)
The JPO and EUIPO confirmed the existing cooperation ties between them and signed a renewal of the MOC in the field of IP.
(3) Malaysia
The JPO and the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) agreed to continue the cooperation regarding the exchange of public data on patents and trademarks, and signed a renewal of the letter of intent (LOI) on the exchange of public data.
Taking advantage of the achievements in a series of meetings, the JPO will continue to promote international IP cooperation so that IP users in Japan and other countries will be able to acquire global patent and other IP rights with high predictability at low cost.
